The drawer is melting...

During a studio visit, a friend asked me why the drawer is melting out of the fridge? I'm not religious but when I was looking for ways to compose "View from the 8th Floor", I found the mother Mary statue in my basement. I thought the statue illustrated the theme of home or protection. And I decided to put the statue in the fridge.

The drawer is positioned like her legs, the shelves are her breasts, the light is her head and the void space of the building to the right becomes her arm. And she cradles the baby on her lap...

cheers

S.

Vote for Irregular Space III

Irregular Space III, acrylic on dibond board, 8ft x 10ft
vote for Irregular Space III everyday until Nov 1 at: http://www.downtownmarkham.ca/publicart

Irregular Space III was a project completed on site at Downtown Markham for a painting competition. 20 artists across Ontario were selected to paint a 8ft x 10ft hoarding board within the 5 day time frame.

For this project, I decided to continue my exploration of irregular spaces and perspective planes. Irregular Space III derived from a thought when I was taking the subway. I wondered if I was taking the train, or was the train taking me?

If you like this painting, please vote for it at: Downtownmarkham.ca/publicart
(you can vote everyday until Nov 1!)

Thank you very much for your support!

Kensington Market Group Exhibition

August 21- September 1, 2013
Opening reception: Thursday August 22. 7-10pm
Propeller Centre for the Visual Arts is proud to host this exhibition featuring well known Kensington based artists, some of the collectives working in the Market, and Propeller members.

I've submitted two works for this exhibition, "Irregular Space I" and "Irregular Space II".

Irregular Space I, conté on paper, 48"x105", display @ Propeller

Irregular Space II, marker on canvas, 60"x 96", display @ Orbital Arts

Notes:
I've drawn "Irregular Space I" after a school art trip to Germany in 2010. Then "Irregular Space II" after a visit to Kensington market recently, followed the similar process as "Space I".

Kensington Market had always been an irregular space for me, a space that is out of the norm. It reminds me of someone who had resisted conformity and developed strong characteristics. The two drawings feature Kensington Market, Museums, Train Stations and airports, thinking spaces, laundry machines, food stands, etc. These places integrate into our lives by penetrating their identity (of the neighbourhood or city) in us as we are building their identity at the same time.

ECHO Group Exhibition

Hey Hey Art Goers,

How is it going on this fine tuesday? (A little too windy in Toronto though, especially for transporting paintings on canvas!)

One of my print making pieces from the Paramnesia series had been selected to participate the Ontario Society of Artists Juried Exhibition. The show opens this thursday, April 4, downtown Toronto at John B. Aird Gallery at 7pm. The gallery is on the first floor, inside of the 900 Bay Street Building (Bay and Wellesley).

cheers,

Susan

Eat, Play, Love

Submission Call Detail:

A Sensual Journey into AphrodisiArt

Curated by Moses Znaimer
In collaboration with Propeller Centre for the Visual Arts

Zoomers the world over have mastered the Sensual Arts of exploration & experimentation in the pleasures of food, drink and lovemaking, perfecting the potency of their aphrodisiacs and elevating their use to an art. ZoomerMedia and Propeller Centre for the Visual Arts invite artists of all disciplines to participate in this visual forum of Zoomer Gastronomie & Sensualité. So wet our appetite and send us your interpretation in the medium of your choice.

My Interpretation:

The Sculpture

The Female

The Male

The Parts

I didn't want to make a painting to illustrate the theme. So the challenge of this project was to find alternative ways to combine the three titles in the theme into one piece of art work. And I was interested in exploring the relationship and the tension between the mechanical and the sensual. How can a sensual act become a mechanical process? Or vice versa. In exploration of different mediums, the narrative of love making is constructed by kitchen tools that are often used to perform mechanical operations. Yet, the act of food preparation could be fun and playful, a sensual journey itself.
This was a call in October, 2012. The exhibition was cancelled but it was still an interesting project.
