Exhibition Announcement

I am very excited to annonce that I will be participating in the annual Salon Exhibition, Salon VII at the Propeller Centre for the Visual Arts. It will feature one of the paintings from 2010, The Eye in the Sky.

Title: The Eye in the Sky
Medium: Oil on Acrylic base
Size: 26"x 32"
Year: 2010
Why did I make it?
The challenge was to use a polychromatic colour scheme. I was interested in the infinite colours in the sky and in the eye. So I decided to place the eye the in sky and explore the possibility of what the eye might see from the sky. This is the only painting I brought back to Toronto with me from my exchange year in Paris.

Traveling photos

These are some of my favourite narrative photos I took while I was in Europe. I could turn them into paintings but they are already paintings in a way.

Studio Mechanics

The Process

I wake up, head to the studio, start working.
I try to organize, to maximize my efficiency.
I try to focus, on creating the painting, the physical object, the product.
"But the florescent light makes you go crazy." A studio mate comments.
It does, when exposed for an extended period of time.
I still try to focus, maximize the time I spend in the studio.

The Statement

"Studio Mechanics" comes from long hours spent in the studio. It is a drawing produced on illustrator to depict the cycle in the space. The product of the artist's creation is not important. The artist herself is not important. She is replaced by a printing machine. The task of creating is suspended by a mechanical process. It repeats itself. And when the lease is up, the artist moves out, and another artist moves in. But the process remains.

Contemporary Furniture Design by Hyungshin Hwang

Hyungshin Hwang is a Korean designer based in Seoul.

I had the chance to meet Hyungshin Hwang at the Arts Bar in Gladstone Hotel in Toronto when he was displaying his light installations. These complex, organic structural lights are made using simple tools (displayed on the floor) and post consumption materials. The pieces are hand cut by the designer then installed together on sight 3 days prior to the show.

As I flipped through the designer's portfolio, I was absolutely amazed by his creations. If I were to put it in an equation:

Creativity + Eco Friendly Concepts + Master Craftsmanship + Functionality = Furniture Design by Hyungshin Hwan
